Punta Gorda Dragon Racing Returns on April 14

On Saturday, April 14, 2012, the Dragon Boats return to Punta Gorda. Taking place from
9:00am until 12:00pm at Laishley Park, the Punta Gorda Dragon Boat Festival sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce is becoming an annual Punta Gorda favorite.

If you would like to participate all you need are 20 coworkers, good friends or fellow students.
Dragon boating is ateam sport, 20 people paddle the 40' long dragon boat 400 meters (in approximately 2 ½ minutes!) to a fast and furious finish. It is fun and rewarding. Included in your entry fee are two practices, each of one hour length in the week before the race. Then on Saturday you are ready to compete.

In addition to competing in a fun sporting event, you are aiding a charity right here in our Punta Gorda Community.

Together with the Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce, the Charlotte Harbor Paddlers, a local dragon boat club, plan to make this an annual event showcasing Punta Gorda's waterfront and the introduction of a water sport where co-ed teams of all ages can participate.

In addition, the Chamber is recruiting Breast Cancer Survivors in the area to form a team. BCS Teams from Tampa and Miami have been invited and will show the way for the first time competitors.

This is also an official SRDBA points race, bringing Dragon Boat paddlers from all over the state of Florida and beyond. (Paddlers: this is your chance to 'tune up' for the Tampa race!)

The annual fun bicycle event, Team Punta Gorda's "Pedal and Play in Paradise," will push off from Laishley Park on March 31. The event will include rides of 15,30 or 62 miles as well as a 10 mile "mystery ride." And in the PM the ever popular City Manager history ride will recur. Warbird Weekend February 25-26

The Florida Warbird Squadron 24 will be holding its 3rd Annual Warbird Weekend on Saturday, February 25, 2012 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, February, 26, 2012 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Punta Gorda Airport.

The event will feature a Static Warbird Display of over 50 classic planes and flyovers. Rides will be available by History Flight in the B-25, T-6, and Stearman Warbirds. This is a fundraiser for veteran's organizations. A donation of $8 per person or $15 for family (adults/children) is requested.

The 2nd Annual Festa Italia comes to Laishley Park in Punta Gorda this weekend. On Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 11a.m. to 6. p.m. the park along the Peace will be transformed into a little bit of Napoli.

Banjo Bash is back. On February 17th and 18th, The Gulf Coast Banjo Society is hosting their 3rd Annual Banjo Bash at the Charlotte County Event and Conference Center. Shows will be held at 6:30 PM on Friday the 17th, and at 1:30 pm and 6:30 pm on Saturday the 18th.

Musicians from all over the world will be performing as well as very famous musicians from around the US and Florida to help raise money for kids to learn how to play musical instruments. Headliners include Buddy Wachter called "the single most influential four-string banjoist of this generation," Johnny Baier, a Canadian National Chamption Banjoist, and Mike Currao, a local player whoc has been nominated to the National Banjo Hall of fame. Hands Across the Harbor Saturday January 28

On Saturday, January 28, 2012, the Charlotte Harbor Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and the Punta Gorda CRA join forces to link two of our most spectacular destinations, with the goal of bringing together Charlotte County residents to celebrate the natural beauty of the harbor. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center .

What is it? A 10 or 20 mile bike ride or an 8K competitive run or a 5K walk.

Where does it begin and end? Registration begins at 6:45 AM and the races start at 8:00 AM in Bayshore Live Oak Park in Port Charlotte. Participants cross the Gilchrist Bridge on Route 41 to downtown Punta Gorda, then circle back for the finish at Bayshore Live Oak Park.

There will be a business Expo in Bayshore Live Oak Park after the race, where you can network, enjoy music, refreshments, hear the Hibiscus Band and see the awards ceremony.

The Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center (CHEC) was established in 1987 as a not-for-profit nature center providing environmental education programs, recreation, research, and preservation land management for the residents of Charlotte County. Spend an afternoon with Doris Day, portrayed by accomplished musician and actress Damaris Peters Pike. The program includes well-known songs associated with the star, as she chats informally about her youth in Cincinnati, memories of the big band days, and her career as a beloved Hollywood star.

Damaris Peters Pike shares her considerable musical talent by dramatizing important historical figures and their times. She has performed her portrayals of “Women of Note” throughouttheUnitedStatesandinFrance. Mrs.Pikeislistedin“Who’s Who among Women” and “Who’s Who in Entertainment.”

JFK The Case for Conspiracy -- Presentation by Leading Expert at CHEC February 27

Nearly 50 years after, questions surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy still abound. One man who has spent a lifetime dedicated to research and writing about this tragic event in our nation's history will be in Punta Gorda to delve into those questions in a presentation on the Killing of a President on February 21st at 7 p.m. at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center.

Robert Groden, one of the leading experts on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is the world's leading expert on the photographic evidence in the JFK case. Mr. Groden has written five best selling books about the assassination, the conspiracy, evidence, the cover-up, and suspects involved. His book, High Treason, was on the New York Times bestseller list for eleven weeks, peaking at number two.

Mr. Groden was the chief consultant to Oliver Stone throughout the filming of the epic movie JFK. He is a leading critic of the Warren Commission, and was the first person to bring the Zapruder film to national TV in 1975, on Good Night America with Geraldo Rivera. His efforts that year proved instrumental in forcing Congress to reopen the investigation creating the House Select Committee on Assassinations, where Mr. Groden served as staff photographic consultant for three years. Mr. Groden was also senior program consultant to the 1988 landmark British documentary mini-series The Men Who Killed Kennedy.

International Federation of Disabled Sailing World Championships January 7-15

2012 IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships will be held Jan. 7-15, 2012 on Charlotte Harbor near Punta Gorda.

The timing of the Races a week before the Rolex Miami Olympic Class Races, which includes the three Paralympic classes, is designed to maximize the top-level competition for sailors prior to the Paralympic Games, scheduled for September 2012 in Weymouth, England.

The 2012 Charlotte Harbor Regatta, set for Feb. 2-5, 2012, will also be open to the Sonar, SKUD-18 and 2.4mR classes, providing three events with international-level competition over a three-week period in beautiful South Florida.

The 2012 Worlds will be staged at Laishley Park Municipal Marina in Punta Gorda, FL. This will be the first “world championship” event in any sport ever to be held in Charlotte County.

The first three days of the schedule — Jan. 7-9 — will be for classification, measurement, registration and practice. The opening ceremony and welcome dinner is set for Jan. 9, with racing to begin Jan. 10 and run through Jan. 15. More details about the race schedule, onshore activities and logistics will be included in the Notice of Race, which will be released by the end of January.

Charlotte Chorale's Kings Brass Fundraiser January 21, 2012

The King's Brass, an internationally acclaimed brass ensemble including three thrumpets, three trombones, a tuba, perscussion and keyboard will perform at the Center for the Performing Arts in Punta Gorda at 4 p.m., Saturday, January 21.

The Group, led by Tim Zimmermann, blends an instrumental sound into a cross-generational musical style that will appeal to all. Critics have applauded the sacred and secular music. Concert-goers will be invited to participate in a sing-along. Tickets are $20.

The 2nd annual Pub Crawl in downtown Punta Gorda will take place on February 25, 2012.

Participants will take a walk through many of the awesome pubs, bars & restaurants of Punta Gorda. The evening concludes back at the Ice House Pub for the final hour at 9:30PM., there are seven stops in all, some with live music. Special rates at downtown hotels and good fairs from local cab companies will be available also free parking in downtown garage. You are asked to bring a canned good to support the hungry which will be donated to Harry Chapin Food bank. This event sold out last year so get your tickets early and come on.

Punta Gorda History Park become "Candy Lane" on December 2 through December 10.

For nine days starting December 2, the History Park in Punta Gorda will transformed into a magical Christmas village "Candy Lane Christmas." The lanes of the park and the historical homes will be decked out in colorful displays... and docents will be hand to talk about the history of Christmas in the area.

Santa Claus will visit the park on Dec. 2, Dec. 3, Dec. 4, Dec. 9 and Dec. 10. Children under 10 years old will be admitted for free. Walkers are asked to raise donations prior to the event. Proceeds, to be shared by the four St. Vincent conferences in the county and the council, will enable them to continue to provide food, clothing, household goods and financial assistance to qualified families and individuals.

The 22nd Annual Peace River Boat Parade is scheduled to set sail around 6 p.m. (dusk) from Edgewater Lake on Sunday, December 11. (The parade has been changed to Sunday this year with a rain date of December 15.)

The Peace River Film Festival opens Friday, September 9 and runs through September 11 featuring the screening of the 10 best films by independent film and video makers from the U.S., Canada, Germany and England out of the 700 submitted to the Black Maria Film and Video Festival, the best of Florida Short Films, and an Open Short Film competition. Michael Uslan, the Executive Producer of the Batman movie series, will be present and will receive a lifetime achievement award as part of opening night activities.

Entries for the Flash Mob, Florida Shorts and Open Shorts competitions must be submitted by Aug. 1. There is a $15 fee for each entry.
